There are two different schools of thought.
1. Write for the search engines. Add keywords wherever possible. Titles, meta tags, img and alt tags, etc.
2. Write for people and use keywords. Personally I tell all of my writers to write for real people. The search engines, especially Google, have come along way in the last few years and are no longer fooled by keyword stuffing. Write for people, use keywords and synonyms, but always write for real people to read.
The on-site aspects of your SEO can still have keywords, but use them naturally.
For example, “Picture of Home for Sale in Texas” is a good image alt tag where, “Home For Sale Texas” is just about the keywords.
